Spain (Madrid): on Renfe Cercanías you validate at the turnstile, but the long-distance/regional ticket is checked at a gate before the platform — keep it until you exit, inspectors do sweep.
Catalonia (Barcelona): don't buy single tickets — the T-casual (10 rides, one person) is far cheaper and works across Metro, bus, tram, and Rodalies inside the same zone. Tap in every single time you change mode.
Portugal (Lisbon): get a reusable Viva Viagem card and load it with zapping credit; you must tap the green reader before boarding the Metro and the trams — an un-tapped card reads as fare-dodging.
