Reading a changelog like a maintainer - 2.1.264 to 2.1.270 in ten minutesCapability

Seven Claude Code releases landed since the last review. Here is the four-line filter the Sunday scan uses to read them in ten minutes, and why 2.1.270 is the one to update to - not 2.1.269.

Why this matters to you

You are on 2.1.268. 2.1.269 (Thursday) added /output-style and claude plugin eval - and made read-only git commands ask for permission after a session had run a while. 2.1.270 (Friday) fixed that. Under the allowlist the Headless Hardening doc proposes, a command that prompts is a command that is denied: a regression like that would have silently broken the morning cron. The weekly review reads the changelog every Sunday; this is what it reads for.

A changelog is written for everyone; you read it for one machine. Four questions sort every line. One: does it touch headless runs - the -p flag, permission modes, --fallback-model, sandboxing? Those lines change what your five LaunchAgents do at 05:15. Two: does it change what a skill or hook sees? 2.1.267 fixed effort: frontmatter on skills being ignored on Fable 5 - if a skill of yours sets effort, it started being honored that day. Three: network deadlines. 2.1.268 gave WebFetch a 300-second cap (CLAUDE_CODE_WEBFETCH_DEADLINE_MS to change it); before that a server that held the connection open could hang the weekly review until the 40-minute watchdog. Four: regressions and their fixes - the phrase 'regression in 2.1.2xx' at the top of an entry is the most important line in the file.

Everything else is noise for a sole operator on one Mac: Claude apps gateway, OTEL attributes, Windows AppContainer, kitty and WezTerm key handling, Bedrock and Vertex. Skim those headings once so you recognise them, then skip.

The update rule that falls out of question four: never update on release day. 2.1.269 shipped Thursday with a regression; 2.1.270 shipped Friday with the fix. Wait one patch, read the top entry, then claude update - on a day when the morning cron has already run, so you see any breakage yourself at the terminal before launchd does.

Worked example

Print only the changelog entries newer than the version you are running.

claude --version

curl -sL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/anthropics/claude-code/main/CHANGELOG.md \
 | awk -v cur="2.1.268" '/^## /{ if ($2==cur) exit } {print}' \
 | grep -E '^## |regression|headless|permission|fallback|WebFetch|skill|hook'
▶ Do it now
  1. Run the two commands. Expect the 2.1.270 and 2.1.269 sections; note the 'regression in 2.1.269' line at the top.
  2. Run claude update (after 09:00, so plan-day has already fired today). Confirm with claude --version.
  3. Tomorrow morning, open PDB/logs/plan-day.log and check the run completed normally on the new version. That is the whole verification.

One-card takeaway

Read a changelog with four questions and one rule: what touches headless, skills, network, and regressions - and never update on release day.
